Rejuvenate your smile with comfortable, long-lasting implant supported dentures in Waterford Twp, MI

By

If you are missing multiple teeth due to a traumatic injury or decay, dentures may be the best option for restoring the look and function of your natural teeth. While dentures have been used for many years to replace missing teeth, modern technology and dental techniques enable patients to have comfortable, long-lasting dentures that look natural and feel great. Dr. Jason Ingber in Waterford Twp, MI provides patients the option of implant supported dentures, which combine the latest denture technology with the stability of dental implants for optimal results.

What are implant supported dentures?

Implant supported dentures are a form of denture that receives extra support and stability in your mouth by being adhered to dental implants that are placed in your gums. Traditional dentures are not attached to anything in your mouth and just sit on your gums, whereas implant supported dentures are affixed to the implants. At least two implants are needed to support the dentures.

There are two types of implant-supported dentures:
  • Ball-retained dentures: In ball-retained dentures, each implant will have an attachment, typically ball-shaped, that fits into a socket-shaped attachment on the denture.
  • Bar-retained dentures: In this type of denture, a thin bar with clips or other types of attachments is attached to the implants. The dentures are then placed over the bar and the clips on the bar attach to the dentures.
Implant supported dentures are often a good choice for the lower jaw because patients typically experience more slipping and discomfort with dentures on the lower jaw, so the implants can provide the needed support and stability for optimal comfort and function. Some patients may choose to have implant supported dentures on both jaws though.

Like regular dentures, dentures supported by implants should be brushed daily and you should remove them to thoroughly brush and clean your mouth as well. Implant supported dentures should not be worn at night while you sleep.

The process of creating and placing implant supported dentures

After you and your dentist have determined that implant supported dentures are the best treatment option, the dentist will make you a temporary denture if you do not already have one. Then, the dentist will perform a surgery to place the implants in your jawbone.

The next surgery will occur after the implants have healed and fused with your jawbone, which is typically three to six months. In the second surgery, which is less intensive than the first surgery, the tops of the implants will be exposed by placing a small incision in your gums where the implants are located, and then a healing collar will be placed on the top of each implant to help the gums properly heal. A few weeks later, the collars are removed and permanent abutments will be added in their place.

The last step is for your dentist to take impressions of your mouth and implants that are then used to create the dentures so they fit with the implants in your mouth. You will try on the dentures once they are ready to make sure they fit properly and are comfortable, and the dentist can make any adjustments necessary before permanently adhering the teeth into the dentures. Once the final dentures are ready, you will come back and the dentures will be clipped into the attachments.
