Dental Health Tips in Waterford Twp MI area

Helpful Dental Health Tips from Metropolitan Dental Center in Waterford Twp, MI

By

Maintaining healthy teeth and gums takes consistent care over the course of a patient’s lifetime. Dr. Jason Ingber and his associates at Metropolitan Dental Center in Waterford Township, MI want nothing more than for their patients to have teeth and gums that are in excellent condition. Dr. Ingber will work with you in the pursuit of this goal, but there are several dental health tips you should know that will help you do your part in maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

Most of us make brushing our teeth a morning and evening priority that we don’t think much about, but there are brushing basics that we need to make sure we are following to get all the benefits that regular brushing offers. Here are some tips you should be following:

Brush Using Proper Technique

The method by which you brush your teeth is just as important as how often you brush. Brushing with improper technique can be almost as bad as not brushing at all. First, take your time. It’s not a race. Don’t brush too hard as this can remove enamel over time. Instead, brush gently, in circular motions to remove plaque. Any plaque missed will eventually harden and lead to calculus accumulation and gingivitis.

Brush Enough

The technique is critical, but you still want to make sure that you are brushing enough for your teeth to stay clean. ADA recommendation for brush time is at least two minutes and twice daily. Some people may not be able to gauge how long two minutes is. Try this: put on a short song or queue up a 2-minute YouTube video to help you with tracking the time. Maybe even set a timer on your phone if necessary. All of these will help you in making sure you are able to thoroughly clean your teeth.

Using the Correct Products

Always try and use a brush that has a head and bristles which are small enough to reach into the nooks and crannies of your molars. Food can hide in these hard to reach spots that you will want cleaned out after eating. The International Dental Health Association states that most adults will need a small or medium-sized toothbrush to achieve this.

Next, look for a toothpaste that sports the ADA Seal of Acceptance on its box. This seal means the toothpaste meets all manufacturing regulations and contains a level of fluoride suitable for adults and children over a certain age that will leave you with successfully clean teeth. Any product with this seal is guaranteed by the ADA to be safe and effective.

Floss and Use a Mouthwash

Floss and Use a Mouthwash in Waterford Twp MI area As with brushing, flossing needs to be done properly. When you get between your teeth, you need to get to the germs that are stuck there. The recommended length of a piece of floss is up to 18 inches in length. This allows a fresh area of the floss to be used every few teeth and will prevent you from reinserting recently removed bacteria back into your teeth/gums. The best technique is to rub the floss against your teeth in a motion that forms a forward/backward ‘C’ shape. Follow flossing with a thorough rinse using an over the counter mouthwash that contains fluoride.

Also, avoid using sharp/pointed items such as toothpicks. Any small injury to your gums could let in bacteria. If you smoke, you should strongly consider quitting. Smoking will raise the risk of many diseases, including gum disease and tooth loss.

Even those who follow proper brushing and flossing habits can, at times, encounter issues that require dental attention. It’s important to know when a visit to the dentist (outside of normal cleanings) will be beneficial. You should contact your dentist if you notice any of the following signs or symptoms suggesting oral health problems:
  • Gums which bleed during normal brushing/flossing
  • Gums that have begun to recede from your teeth
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Permanent teeth that are becoming loose
  • Tooth sensitivity to hot and cold
  • Long-term bad breath and/or a bad, unusual taste in your mouth
  • Pain while chewing
Early detection, as well as treatment of any problems that arise, will help ensure a lifetime of good oral health. Dr. Ingber is here for you in the event you encounter any of these issues and will set you back on the path to excellent oral health. Call us at (248) 674-0418 for a consultation appointment if you are in the Davisburg, Waterford township or cities nearby.
