Your Dental Crown Procedure in Auburn Hills area

All about your dental crown procedure from a dentist in the Auburn Hills area

By

Dental crowns are caps that are placed over natural teeth in order to protect them from breaks, strengthen the chewing structure, and prevent bacteria from entering the enamel. They are often used on teeth that have large fillings or those that have undergone root canals. At Metropolitan Dental Center, dental crowns are one of the most common procedures performed in our office. As such, we’ve come up with a list of Frequently Asked Questions about dental crowns and what you should know before your procedure. If you are in the Auburn Hills, MI area and are looking for a quality family dental team that provides comprehensive services, give us a call at (248) 365-7737.

What are the most common reasons for a dental crown?

We may recommend a dental crown in the following instances:
  • Protect the tooth – teeth that are impacted by severe decay are often weak and susceptible to breakage. A crown can also help with a tooth that has fractured.
  • Restore the tooth – if a tooth has been severely worn down.
  • Anchor a dental bridge – for individuals who are missing teeth
  • Improve the appearance of a tooth – if teeth are severely discolored or misshapen
  • Compete a dental implant – for individuals missing a tooth

What are dental crowns made of?

Dental crowns can be made of a variety of different materials, including:
  • Metals – Alloy and gold are two of the most common types of metal crowns. Metal crowns are often chosen due to their strength and minimal wear over time. They are typically reserved for molars due to their color.
  • Porcelain fused to metal – Unlike metal crowns, these crowns can be color matched to blend in with the smile, although sometimes the metal underneath the porcelain can appear as a dark line along the gumline.
  • Ceramic / Porcelain – These crowns are the most natural looking and can be made to blend in seamlessly in the smile. They are not as strong as porcelain fused to metal but are still an excellent choice for front teeth.

What is the dental crown process?

Most dental crowns can be completed in two visits. The first visit is to prepare the tooth while the second is for placement of the final restoration.

First visit

During this visit, x-rays are taken to check the health of the tooth and determine if a root canal is needed prior to the crown.

In order to prepare the tooth for the crown, the area will be numbed, and the tooth will be filed down to allow room for the crown to fit over it. The amount of enamel removed depends on the type of crown being placed.

Once this is complete, impressions can be made of the tooth and are then sent to a laboratory for custom fabrication of the crown. A temporary crown will be placed over the tooth to cover it while you are waiting for your final crown. These temporary crowns are often made of acrylic and held in place with a temporary cement.

Second visit

Once the permanent crown is made, you will schedule a second visit. The dentist will remove the temporary crown and then evaluate the permanent crown for proper fit and color. Small adjustments to the fit can be made in the office before it is cemented into place.

How long do dental crowns last?

How long do dental crowns last in the Auburn Hills area Dental crowns are not a permanent restoration and will often have to be replaced over time. The longevity of the dental crown depends a lot on proper oral hygiene and care as well as personal habits such as grinding, chewing ice, or biting your fingernails. On average, crowns can last anywhere from 10-15 years.

How do I take care of my dental crown?

Crowned teeth should be treated just like natural teeth. You should make sure to practice good at home oral care by brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing once a day.
