What to expect when you need a dental crown for tooth repair in our Waterford Twp area practice

Treatment with the team at Metropolitan Dental Center is straightforward and simple. Our patients are empowered with information that will help them choose from available treatment options, such as dental crowns for tooth repair. Care begins in a consultation appointment in our Waterford Twp area practice.

During your consultation and examination visit, your dentist will perform diagnostic testing such as x-rays and / or digital imaging. Gaining an in-depth view of tooth structure both above and below the gumline is an important part of the care process due to the fact that this is the best way to determine the extent of existing and potential problems. If there is a tooth in question, physical examination will focus on this tooth structure. Depending on the extent of damage, a crown may be the best solution for beautiful, long lasting repair.

Before a dental crown can be placed, the tooth must be treated. After numbing medication is applied, damaged tooth material is gently removed and remaining structure is shaped to accommodate the crown restoration. Following this preparatory and restorative step, an impression is taken of the tooth. From this impression, a mold is made and is used in the fabrication of a customized crown. A crown is not only made to fit in well with adjacent teeth, but also with the opposing tooth to achieve comfortable, effective chewing.

Crowns are made by skilled ceramists in a reputable dental laboratory. The process can take a few weeks so a temporary restoration is cemented to the prepared tooth to provide protection until the permanent crown is ready for placement.

Once the permanent crown has been returned to our office, a second appointment can take place. After the removal of the temporary crown, the tooth is cleaned and the permanent crown is assessed for fit before it is bonded to the natural tooth structure. The strong bond between the crown and tooth will last for years.

Patients of Metropolitan Dental Center receive outstanding care from a compassionate team of experts. In addition to providing a variety of treatment options for specific dental goals, we are happy to explain the details of treatment so that our patients may make the best choice for care.
