Waterford Twp, MI area dentist explains regenerative tooth fillings

Tooth Fillings Waterford Twp MI
Fillings are one of the most common dental procedures we perform in our office. In the majority of cases, dental fillings are successful at protecting the inner tooth pulp, but there are some instances when they fail, which causes the need for a root canal.

Recently, scientists in the United Kingdom have devised a special dental material that can actually regenerate the dentin layer of tissue in the tooth.

The anatomy of your teeth is four “layers” of tissue. The enamel, or outside layer, is the hardest. Underneath it is the second hardest-layer, dentin, which is important because it surrounds the pulp. The pulp is where all the bundled nerves and connective tissue within the tooth reside. And finally, there is cementum, which covers the tooth root.

When there is a cavity that causes the pulp to become infected it can be extremely painful for patients. A cavity that exposes the pulp will need to be capped. Pulp capping is a technique to preserve the dental pulp and keep it from dying.

Regenerative tooth fillings are made of a synthetic biomaterial that can stimulate repair and regeneration of the pulp tissue and dentin. The material can be placed similarly to a traditional tooth filling and can help prevent the approximate 10 to 15 percent of fillings that fail. By encouraging regrowth of additional dentin to protect the filling, it can also reduce the potential of a future root canal or extraction.

At Metropolitan Dental Center in Waterford Twp, MI, we encourage all of our patients to maintain a proper daily oral hygiene routine to reduce the risk of decay and need for tooth fillings. When patients consume a nutritious diet, brush their teeth at least twice per day and floss once per day, it can dramatically reduce the occurrence of cavities.
