Waterford Twp, MI dentist describes the benefits of tooth colored fillings services

By

At Metropolitan Dental Center in Waterford Twp, MI, patients in and around the community will want to visit a dentist when they believe they have tooth decay affecting their smiles. Tooth decay, also known as cavities or “dental caries,” is a common problem for men and women. Cavities can develop due to poor oral hygiene habits or from patients not visiting their dentist regularly for cleanings and examinations. When cavities are found, there are benefits to addressing them with services such as tooth-colored fillings.

Why choose tooth-colored fillings

In many dental practices, patients can have their cavities filled with silver amalgam. However, these fillings are unsightly in the smile and can detract from an otherwise beautiful look. Thankfully, patients can opt for more cosmetic solutions such as tooth-colored fillings. These fillings are done with the use of a material called composite resin. This material is like a putty that can be shaped into place and hardened using a specialized light. Once this has been done, the dentist is able to file it down and polish it to look just like the natural tooth enamel. With the use of composite resin, patients can achieve a more beautiful smile even when cavities exist.

Who is a candidate?

Composite resin is a completely biocompatible material that can be used in the smile, and all patients are considered appropriate candidates for these types of fillings. Dr. Jason Ingber and his team of professionals at Metropolitan Dental Center are proud to use tooth colored fillings as not only a way of enhancing the health of the smile, but also the beauty.

What are the primary benefits of tooth colored fillings?

Tooth colored fillings are:

  • Affordable
  • Cosmetic
  • Resistant to temperature changes
  • Safe
  • Easy to care for
  • Simple to replace

The process of obtaining tooth colored fillings

First, a patient will be diagnosed with a cavity. This is a hole in the tooth that can cause sensitivity or discomfort. It can be diagnosed with a simple physical evaluation as well as x-rays. Once the area has been spotted, the patient can choose to have their filling done during the same appointment. Patients are properly anesthetized, so they are comfortable in the treatment chair. Then, the dentist will remove the decayed portion of the tooth with specialized instruments. The area is then treated to ensure that there is no bacteria present. Once this has been done, the dentist will then apply the composite resin material into the area and use a specialized light that hardens the resin. Filing of the dental material is then done, as well as polishing, to give it the same shine and appearance as natural tooth enamel. Many patients are unable to spot which tooth was treated with tooth colored fillings because it blends in so well with the enamel of the tooth that it is practically indistinguishable!

Why many practices stopped using silver amalgam fillings

Image of a dentist checking patients mouth While tooth colored fillings have been around for a while, silver amalgam fillings have been around even longer and are unfortunately still used by dentists today. Silver amalgam fillings are comprised of 50 percent mercury, a toxin. Because of this, some patients experience mercury exposure, which can have an impact on their health and wellbeing. Silver amalgam fillings also expand and contract with temperature changes which can allow bacteria into the tooth to cause an infection. Studies continue to show the benefits of using composite resin fillings instead of silver amalgam fillings to treat areas of decay, and therefore, our professionals avoid the use of silver amalgam fillings. We want our patients to be safe and healthy, and provide the appropriate services to improve oral health, not negatively impact it.
